A picturesque retreat beside Coniston Water in the Lake District

Eat, Drink, Sleep and Explore

The Waterhead Hotel is now closed during our exciting new renovation and refurbishment project

Known for our friendly, relaxed ‘home from home’ feel, the Waterhead Hotel in Coniston makes the perfect Lake District retreat. Guests can relax in the comfortable lounge bar and enjoy the view across the hotel lawns down to Coniston Water and beyond. The hotel’s restaurant looks out onto magnificent mountain scenery and offers excellent local cuisine.

Our stunning location makes us the perfect base from which to explore the Lake District National Park (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with an abundance of attractions for visitors, whether your interests lie in the many literary connections the area has to offer or in outdoor pursuits there is certainly something for everyone.

The Waterhead has been a hotel for over 100 years and in its early days, the hotel frequently welcomed the illustrious Victorian artist and social critic, John Ruskin, as a guest. Ruskin’s former home, Brantwood, lies just across the water and many of his visitors, including Charles Darwin, would stay as guests at the hotel.

The village of Coniston enjoys a long association with many notable literary figures. Tennyson spent his honeymoon here, Turner painted the mountain scenery and the author Arthur Ransome used Coniston Water as the setting for his famous ‘Swallows and Amazons’ series of books.
